The University of Turku (UTU) doctoral programmes have an open call for approximately 70 fixed-term doctoral researcher positions with an employment contract. The application period runs from 29 August to 12 September 2025. Both early-stage and more advanced doctoral researchers can be selected for the positions.

Turku School of Economics

Turku School of Economics (TSE) was founded in 1950. Today we are part of the multidiciplinary University of Turku and we are a tight-knit international community of 3,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, 200 researchers and lecturers, and exchange students. Graduate School and the Doctoral Programme of Turku School of Economics (DPTSE)

The Doctoral Programme of Turku School of Economics aims at training experts for the needs of business, society, and the academic community. It offers scientific researcher training to solve relevant, current, and anticipated problems related to business, economy, and society. The Doctoral Programme of Turku School of Economics is a part of the University of Turku Graduate School (UTUGS). The University of Turku Graduate School (UTUGS) consists of doctoral programmes that cover all disciplines and approximately 2,000 doctoral candidates of the University. 

About Department of Accounting and Finance

Department of Accounting and Finance specialises in three subjects: Accounting and Finance, Business Law and Quantitative Methods in Management. The head of the Department is Professor Luis Alvarez Esteban. Accounting and Finance is by far the biggest major at TSE in terms of (under)graduate students. Due to its popularity, we have been forced to limit the intake to 70–80 students during the past years. Each year, we typically accept one or two new PhD students to study finance.

Turku School of Economics is one of the seven members of the Graduate School of Finance (GSF) – a joint Finnish nationwide doctoral program in finance. The main objective of GSF is to promote high-quality doctoral education in finance in Finland by organizing advanced-level doctoral courses, seminars, and workshops. GSF offers a well-structured teaching program for obtaining a Ph.D. degree in finance for students of the member universities.

Turku School of Economics is also one of the thirteen members of the Nordic Finance Network (NFN). Nordic Finance Network (NFN) is a network for research and doctoral training in finance. The main objective of NFN is to promote Nordic doctoral education in finance. GSF and NFN also provide support for travel costs, external visits and invited supervisors.

Doctoral Studies in Finance, GSF and NFN

The finance coursework consists of 40 ECTS credits of studies, done mostly during the first year of studies. More information about the coursework can be found here. The backbone of the studies is the four compulsory and one elective courses in finance that are offered by the GSF. In addition, the courses offered by the Nordic Finance Network are also available.

Applications are accepted in Fall and Spring. Fall applications are also considered for funded positions, although the competition is fierce. Funding is provided for up to four years.
